WIBW Pickup of CNNMoney Story David comments

Posted by Chris Kirk on December 31, 2009

The dispute reflects television’s changing business model as programming choices continue to expand and advertising revenues plummet, noted David Wertheimer, chief executive of the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California.

Cable networks have always counted on revenue from both advertising and subscriber fees. So even as ad sales have declined, cable channels have stayed afloat on those fees, which have remained steady according to Wertheimer. But broadcast networks that rely solely on ad revenue are casting about for new sources of revenue, which is likely what’s driving Fox’s bid for higher fees.

Insight Art Institute quotes Bryan about possible Apple Tablet

Posted by Chris Kirk on December 17, 2009

Even so, all eyes are on the proposed Apple Tablet because it could be an anytime/anywhere content device, says Bryan Gonzalez, a technical project specialist at the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California.

“It’s big enough to provide a solid entertainment experience, but small enough to be carried around easily,” Gonzalez says. “Much depends on the execution, but given the Net-friendliness of the Kindle and the interface innovation of the iPhone, it’s likely to be something special.”

ETC Returns to Las Vegas for the Next CES

Posted by Rob Scott on December 16, 2009

Welcome to our coverage of the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).  Presented by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), CES is the world’s largest annual consumer technology tradeshow.

The Entertainment Technology Center will be tracking the most interesting and breaking entertainment technology news coming out of this year’s event.  Following the success of last year’s venture, the ETC has expanded its reporting team in order to provide our member companies with pertinent, timely commentary and analysis online daily via this blog.

We plan on bringing you important announcements from keynotes and conference sessions featuring Steve Ballmer, Gary Shapiro, Paul Otellini, Paul Jacobs, and others; the latest announcements from press conferences scheduled with heavy-hitters such as Sony, Panasonic, Cisco and Samsung; in addition to the latest products and services on display from the show floor.

And new this year, on January 7th the ETC will host a series of sessions that address 3D for the home, over-the-top services and mobile distribution of content.  For those unable to attend, we’ll report via this blog what senior executives from the content and CE industries have to say about the future of entertainment creation, distribution and consumption.

Our goal is to deliver the latest CE news to your desktops and mobile devices by working together to distill the avalanche of information from CES into what is most interesting and relevant to the entertainment industry.

Earlier in 2009, CEA research director and economist Shawn DuBravac listed a few trends he anticipates will play out at this years show: 2009 was the “Year of the App,” international companies continue to look for ways to leverage the popularity of the iPhone, software may be the biggest incognito category at the show, and green trends will mean more than simply “eco-friendly designs and packaging”…

We’ll be watching to see if Shawn’s predictions play out at this year’s show.  We also expect to see some additional technologies and trends emerge as this year’s stars during the 2010 CES:

Beyond HD: Tomorrow’s TV Experience. Connected displays will deliver a new interactive environment with access to content, movies, music, widgets and more.

3DTV Will Go Mainstream. We expect to see an array of active shutter and circular polarized displays as well as a new 3D Blu-ray spec.  Also, don’t be surprised if there are a few content deals: new content and 2D-3D conversions of catalog titles.

Connected TV Solutions. Watch for ideas that provide more ways for consumers to discover and view content.  For example, Boxee will unveil the set-top “Boxee Box” to play and manage digital media on your TV.

Content: Connecting and Corralling. Mobile TV, devices meet services, packaged media, software and more.

New Screens Find the Sweet Spot. A new crop of portable devices will highlight new innovation – and new business deals/partnerships will take shape.

Next Generation Mobile Devices and Services. Watch for reporting on the Saygus V Phone, Google NexusOne and MoSoNex Connect…to name just a few.

Ebooks, Netbooks and Smartbooks. The miniaturization of the computer continues with a slew of new products featuring new form-factors: Barnes & Noble Nook, Entourage eDGe, NVIDIA Smartbook.

Customization & Personalization Empower the Individual. Apps are omnipresent and maturing CE segments crave accessories.  This should be a major theme this year.

Our coverage will begin Wednesday, January 6th with blog postings updated several times each day of the show.  Following CES, we will be compiling a post show report that will focus on trends and predictions for the upcoming year.

If there are any specific products you want to see, or if there is a general area of particular interest, pop us an email at mailto:ces@etcusc.org, and we will send someone out to investigate.
