Named “BIGD,” the new auditorium will include a wall-to-wall screen measuring 60 feet wide and nearly three stories tall, the latest in 7.1 surround sound and DIGITAL projection of both 2D and 3D features. In technical terms, Carmike’s “BIGD” DIGITAL experience is powered by a cutting edge Christie Brilliant 3-D flash projector. Images are projected onto a colossal wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor screen. The end result is a light output of 30,000 lumens, creating a picture quality with noticeably higher resolution than HD.
To further enhance the experience, the custom QSC DIGITAL audio system is tuned to a 7.1 speaker array with 16 channels and the ability to upgrade to 11.1, a revolution in surround sound technology with DIGITAL audio processing supported by quad-amplified, 4-way speakers and six 21-inch subwoofers. The new, expanded configuration at the Chattanooga Carmike 12 promises a new gold standard in unparalleled picture clarity and deep resonating DIGITAL sound.

[Philip Lelyveld comment: very well-produced video. Among other things, he has developed a technique to filter crosstalk]
[LaptopVideoTube]
Edgar Choueiri, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton University, has developed a way to play true three-dimensional sound recordings over regular loudspeakers, such as those found in televisions and computer laptops. The technique may one day be used to allow 3D televisions to produce lifelike sound and to help people with certain types of hearing impairments locate noises. Segments of the video above incorporate Choueri’s 3D filter to demonstrate the phenomenon. The filter is designed to work with loudspeakers – not headphones – and can be experienced through standard computer speakers. (Make sure the right and left speakers are on the correct sides.) [Press Release]
Legend3D, the leading innovator in 2D-to-3D conversion technology, today announced its role as the primary conversion vendor on the highly-anticipated 3D holiday release of Hugo—a live-action fantasy film based on the popular children’s novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Hugo is renowned director Martin Scorsese’s first stereoscopic 3D film, and opened on Nov. 23, 2011, in select RealD 3D and IMAX 3D theaters throughout the U.S.
While Hugo was shot using 3D camera rigs, Legend3D was tasked with restoring, colorizing and converting to 3D an assortment of vintage 2D material across three key sequences in the film. This included classic cinema from the early 1900s, such as Georges Melies’ A Trip to the Moon and The Merry Frolics of Satan, as well as new footage of Ben Kingsley in his role as Melies. To accomplish this, the Legend3D team first prepared the source material in 2D, using restorative techniques to stabilize and accentuate the image quality while still retaining the vintage “look.” This material was then converted to 3D to match the overall depth of Scorsese’s native photography. …

The Bedford Report Provides Equity Research on Seven Arts Entertainment & Lions Gate Entertainment
…
While at its advent, 3D technology seemed like it would represent a huge secular shift for the sector, the mix between 3D and 2D movie patrons seems to be favouring 2D somewhat more after a strong initial push by 3D. This could be because movies unworthy of 3D have spoiled the “brand” and now that producers are more selective with which movies are shot in the different formats, 3D will regain popularity.

[Philip Lelyveld comment: This has nothing to do with S3D. Crest has successfully leveraged the 3D marketing wave by attaching a vaguely related message (white teeth = movie star) to a product.]

[Crest 3D White Strips website]
Crest 3D White Strips: Commercially available, these teeth whitening strips certainly are a little bit extra pricey than your average toothpaste. For approximately $forty for a two-week supply gives you, you can get successful outcomes from this at-your house resolution of whitening your teeth. Essentially take full advantage of the upper and reduce strips two instances daily for about thirty minutes, and you will get your teeth to be significantly whiter within just days. …

Killzone 3
Was it the 3D feature which cemented Killzone 3 as a stellar shooter? Probably not, we hedge our bets on the incredibly detailed guns which tore Helgast apart like wet paper. Killzone 3 was polished to perfection with bleeding-edge graphics, intelligent foes and responsive controls. Despite a predictable storyline, Killzone 3 was leaner and tougher than many other shooter of 2011.
